What is Padlet? (Padlet Tutorial 2019)

What is Padlet? In several videos
recently I mentioned the program Padlet So in this video I’m going to do a Padlet tutorial and show you exactly what Padlet is So stay tuned! You may have seen in one of my recent videos that I keep bringing up this program called Padlet Padlet’s been around for a while But I just recently discovered it and I’m really loving it Padlet is a collaboration tool It was originally designed to help teachers collaborate with their students It was a fun way for teachers to get their kids interested in school outside of school Their kids could get on a Padlet board and add video, music, photos or maybe just text But there is a lot more to a Padlet than this. It’s super easy to use and super versatile as well Now Padlet has several different pricing options It has ones for school, ones for business and a personal To get started with any of them, you can just do ‘Sign Up It’s Free’ One of the nice things about Padlet is it can be used across any device. All the paid plans have a 30 day free trial The school plan is called ‘Backpack’. and it has plans starting at $12 a month The business plan is called ‘Briefcase’ and it again has plans staring at $12 a month And then there’s the Pro Plan for individuals With the free plan you can have up to 3 Padlets but if you want to have more than 3 Padlets you’re going to need to pay for the Pro Plan which is $8.25 a month I’m not gonna go into all the features that are in all the different plans But let me go ahead and log in and show you what Padlet does When you first sign up to Padlet, it’s going to give you the option with logging in with Google logging in with Microsoft or you can just use an email and a password. Once you get signed in you’ll be brought to your dashboard This is where you can arrange your Padlets I have 2 of them up here right now. The daily dog share, which is one I share with a couple friends And another one called the customer journey which is one I share with clients who want to look at what a customer journey making an online course looks like Up at the top you’ll see 4 buttons We have the make a Padlet, join a Padlet, Join a Padlet is when somebody else has created a Padlet and they invited you to join When you join up to Padlet, you’ll be able to join their Padlet by including the link You just click, and enter the link to the Padlet that you’ve been invited too We also have a Gallery, which we’ll look at later. and the upgrade button If at any time you feel the need to upgrade, you can just click on that button there, and it’ll take you right to the Pro Plan Before we start making a Padlet let’s take a look at these buttons down the side Recents will show you the ones that you’ve been in recently Made will show you the ones that you made Shared will show you ones that have been shared with you Liked are Padlet’s that you’ve liked. You’ve tapped the heart icon and want to go back to them Archived are any that you’ve saved And you can even create a new folder to sort your Padlets Up here in the top corner, you can click on this button to get to your account As you can see right here, it says I have 2 of my 3 Padlets used. And again it gives me a place to upgrade from here Home will always take me to the dashboard, which is where I am Profile will let me edti my profile Drive will show me what I have stored on here Stats will show me what’s been going on with my Padlets And you can get into the settings for more advanced information So let’s go ahead and get started by making a Padlet We’re going to go to the pink button right here that says Make A Padlet Now we’re going to be offered several different styles You can go with a Wall which will pack content in a brick like layout A canvas, if you want to scatter them around A Stream, which is great for blogging because it everything lines up in a row A Grid, which starts across the top, and goes downward. Shelf stacks everything in columns There’s a Backchannel to communicate like in a chat This one would be great for a discussion board And then this one here called the Map I actually haven’t tried the Map yet, but I am curious. If you continue to scroll down it will show you some templates These are out of the Gallery You can see things like Mood Boards, Bookmarks, But we’ll go through more of those later Let’s go pick a blank canvas and get started We’re just going to try the freestyle canvas here. So, I’m going to click Select and it starts making your Padlet Now anytime you make a Padlet, it’s going to give it a really fun title and a really fun description These are going to be the first thing you change For this demonstration I’m going to call this one Demo Board and add a description Now once you’ve changed the title, and you’ve changed the description, you can see that that’s showing up over here in the top other corner Next you have the option to choose an icon You can either leave it at none or you can click over and pick an emoji You can also add your own down here at the bottom Let’s pick this cute little pig Now that we have that picked, we’re going to go up to the top and go back and let’s go down to the next one The next item is the Padlet address It’s going to give you a random set of letters But you can change it to whatever you want This is going to change the address to your Padlet board Right now it says Padlet.com 76/ and the end part is the address So let’s change that to Demo Board Now once I’m done doing this part, this address up at the top should change. We’ll check back on that As you go down, next you run into Appearance You can choose whatever wallpaper you want It put up this blue but you just click the arrow and you can pick solid colors, gradients, textures and patterns, pictures and even add your own We’re going to go ahead and keep this blue one up It looks really good for this purpose Next you have the color scheme You can go with a light color scheme or a darl color scheme Since I have such a dark background, i’m gonna go ahead and keep it at the light color scheme so we have a great contrast There are four different types of font you can use. depending on how you want your Padlet to look. i’m gonna go ahead and stick with the first one. The next section is called Posting. The first one is attribution This is display the author’s name above each post. You can either have this on or off. I like to turn that one on. If you do invite somebody to your board that hasn’t joined, but you do have it open to comments, it’s gonna come up and say their anonymous. Next is Comments Allow viewers to comment on posts. This includes you So you may want to turn that one on too. The next section’s kinda fun. It’s just reactions. It’s set at none to start with But you can click over and you can choose from hearts, if you want somebody to like a post. You have upvote and downvote. You have stars. Give one to five. And then you have a grade. With the grade you get numeric score points. We’re just gonna go with ‘Like’. The next section is called Content Filtering Depening on who you’re sharing your board with, you may want to have some of these activated. The first one is ‘Require Approval’. Do you want to have to approve everything that’s put on your Padlet. If so, you’re going to want to turn this on. And the second one is ‘Profanity Filter’. It replaces bad words with nice emojis. That’s kinda fun. Let’s turn that on. Now that we’ve gone down the list here, if everything’s looking good to you let’s click next Oh, before I forget, now that we’ve saved that board, you can see up here in the top that the URL has changed to ‘demoboard’ just like we wanted it to. But let’s go over to the other side and i’m going to show you how to set up some privacy settings. Up here on the other side you will see you have a heart. That is where you can ‘heart’ boards that you like. Remake, if you want to totally start a bard over. And Share. In the ‘Share’, is some very important settings. Once you click on ‘Share’, you automatically get something that says invite members. When you click ‘Invite Members’, you can pick them by username or by email. Now this is one of the important parts. This is the privacy settings. To change the privacy you go down here to ‘Change Privacy’ And you can see the four different levels of privacy. The first one is ‘Private’. That one’s hidden completely from the public and just for your personal use. The next one is ‘Password Protected’. This one’s great if you want to share with people but you still want a little extra protection. You just add a password so only people with that password can access it. The next level of security is ‘Secret’. It keeps the Padlet hidden from the Public, but you can still put it on a share link. You can use this option when you’re embedding it in your own website. That way it can still be accessible to anyone that’s on your website. but is not available in Google search. This one is similar to having an unlisted video on YouTube. If people have the link they can still find it. And the last one is ‘Public’. This one means it’s going to be indexed by Google search. For this demonstration let’s go with secret. Another things you’re gonna want to do while you’re in this window, is set the visitor permissions. When somebody comes to your Padlet, what do you want them to be able to do? You can go with ‘Can Read’. In other words they can view but they can not add to the post, they can not edit them, approve others posts or modify. The next one is ‘Can Write’. That means they can view and they can add posts, but they can not edit and approve other members posts. And this last one is ‘Can Edit’. They will be able to view, add posts, edit and approve other posts. They cannot modify or delete the Padlet. So be careful who you give this power to. Now that we have it set at secret and can read, let’s click ‘Save’. Now while we’re in the sharing section, let’s talk about the other settings. From sharing you can copy a link to share Padlet to a clipboard. You can make a QR code You can embed your Padlet on a blog or website. Send it via email Share on Facebook. Share on Twitter or share in Google Classroom. As I said before, this was originally designed for teachers. If you decide you want to share it on a blog or on your website, you just click this button right here, And it’s going to give you the html code you need You just hit copy and you can put it on your website And this is for the full embed. In other words, it’s fully functioning. So, if you have it set to ‘Can Write’, like a guest book, people will be able to do that directly on the website you’re putting it on. Now, if you want to put it on WordPress.com, but not on WordPress.org, you can just use this link right down here. The last method it has for embedding is this ‘Preview Card’ method. This shows an image that will link to your Padlet. But will not have the entire thing on your site. Down here at the bottom of the share options, you have export options. You can save it as a png. You can save it as a pdf. You can save it as a CSV Save it to use on Excel or print it. So there are a lot of sharing options and how you can share your Padlet with others Let’s close out of this and start playing with the Padlet board. Now there are two ways to add cards to your Padlet board. The first one is down here where you click the pencil and it just puts one up. or you can just double click and it will put one up. You have space for a title and a space to write something From here you can also upload, insert a link, google something, take a snap, and even more. Remember Padlet can be used on a phone so if you want to have people take pictures from their phone and add it to your Padlet this is a good option. In the ‘More’. You’ll see it has the upload, link, Google search, snap. You can capture video from your camera. You can do an audio recording Record your screen Draw You have maps And links to other Padlets Say you have a Padlet that you want to send people to from this Padlet. That’s possible. Let’s say I want to put in a link to my YouTube channel. I would just click on this link, paste in my YouTube address and click save. Now, it’s gonna automatically source my picture. And I just click over to the side to put it in there. Now as you can see, since I have commenting people can add a comment and they can also ‘Heart’ it You can left click and hold to drag your post wherever you want. Move it over to the left, to the right, up and down. You can click on the pencil to go in and edit it. You can delete it or again we have some buttons here. You can change the color of the post. Right now it”s on white. Let’s try this blue. And that’s what the post looks like with blue. Then a yellow. That looks nice and bright. Let’s add another post to our page. This time we’re going to do an upload. When you click upload, it’ll give you pictures that you already put on other Padlets. If you want to use a picture that’s not already uploaded to your Padlet you just click ‘Pick File’ and you’ll be able to upload it. I’m gonna go ahead and pick one that I have on here already. There we go. Now some of the other things that you can do with your Padlet, when you’re putting them around, You can click here and hit connect post I can connect this post to this one with an arrow. To undo that, I go back in, hit disconnect from post and I can take that arrow out. So that way you can point people around to different posts that you want to connect together. If you want to connect it the other way, you just pick which one you want to start with and which one you want the arrow to go to And whichever one you’re in you can disconnect from it. Also sometimes they may overlap. Since this post was put on first it goes behind it. To change that I would just click on this one right here hit send to back and now it’s behind that first post. Another thing you can do, is transfer a post. When you transfer a post, you can move it to one of your other Padlets. You can also copy a post. You can copy it to a new Padlet Copy to this Padlet oe pick another Padlet to send it to. You can expand a post. to take a close view at how it looks As you can see it’s showing you my YouTube channel. Now to get out of that you just go up here to the top and hit close. You can also delete the posts from in here. If at any time you want to change any of your original settings, you go up here to the modify button, And that where you get to the title, description, icon, the address, and all the other settings that we set up to start with. And you can change these at any time. If you click these three dots up at the top, it’s going to give you a lot more options. It’ll give you info about the Padlet. Help if you need that. Again, you can like it from here, remake it, enter full screen, invite people, share, embed, export, print, modify and even change the format. When you click on ‘Change Format’, It gives you the option to change it from a wall, stream, grid, shelf and all the other styles we saw. Let’s change this one to a stream and see how it looks. There we go. Now with the stream it has them placed right here in the middle. It looks a little more like a blog this way. Let’s go up there again, click on change format, and this time let’s go with a shelf. Now in the shelf we have column one. And here is where we have those first two. You will be able to change the name of the column by clicking on here and rename the column. You can also add new columns. This would be a great example of making a CSV or a spreadsheet. Any of the information that was made into these columns would fit really well in those. Now, if we change the format again, and put it back to stream, and then go to share. and save as a PDF It’s gonna give you a choice of letter size, A4 or legal portrait or landscape We’re going to leave it at letter and portrait and push publish PDF. Now as you can see, it put all the information on there that was on the Padlet. The more information you have on there, the more it’s gonna put in the PDF. I think this would be a great solution for making up a media kit for your business. Now let’s go back to the dashboard and take a look at those other Padlets’ To go back to the dashboard you just click on your account and hit home. Go back to made And now you can see I have 3 boards. I have the demo board, which I am working on. The daily dog share which is one between me and some friends. And the customer journey. I’m not gonna show you the daily dog share, but let me show you the customer journey one. This is one I made for potential clients who are interested in creating an online course. I have a little beginning, and as you can see, I used the arrow system. You have the little introduction here at the first and it goes over and says, “it starts with an idea” And then I have videos to help them with their very first steps in making an online course. Then it goes over to ,”Plan your strategy” and it has the strategy information. And then, “pick your method of delivery”. Email, Udemy, Skillshare. So, if somebody comes on this Padlet and decides they want to look at one of these, They can just click it and watch it directly in the Padlet, They can go to full screen and watch the video from there. They can jump over to YouTube or they can even open it in a new window. There are a lot of options. All of these that I put on this board are videos. Let’s go back up to the top and go back to Home and let’s jump over to the gallery. Just to give you a little more inspiration. You can actually follow people on Padlet including the Gallery The gallery is always updating and putting new ones in here. This one was just made 14 minutes ago. This one an hour, this one two hours. and you can see how often they’re made. You can scroll down and just check out all kinds. Here’s one that was made for recipes. Let’s click and take a look at that one. They used a nice picture of cupcakes here in the background. And they have several different recipes up here. If you click on the recipe, it takes you to that recipe on the blog site. You can also copy the posts or expand the posts. This is a great idea if you want to save a bunch of blog posts from all over. This one here is called, ‘Template Padlets for Work’. It had feedback, design inspiration, new employee introduction, company overview. It also has staff bios, introductions, office notice board and human resources. I could see how this could be useful to a small business. Putting everything in one Padlet where everyone can easily access it to find out the information they want to. This one here, somebody set up a mood board.where they put in colors And they made sure to make the background match. And then they added a lot of photos Now this one here has been made with a lot of Podcats in it. And you can always see at the bottom it tells you the source. This one’s on Earwolf. This one’s on Quora. The Moth, Apple Podcasts and others. If you decide you like one of these templates, you just click the ‘Remake’. You can change the title and description. And you can copy the design with just the layout, wallpaper, theme icon and tags or you can copy all the posts too. If you want to retain the people and the privacy settings you click down here And you can copy the authorship, the name of the people that posted. Let’s change the title just to Podcats. And call it podcats I like. And we’re going to go ahead and copy the texts and attachments too. And we’re going to hit submit. And now as you can see my name is at the top of this. And when I go back to home, there it is. The podcast one. So what kind of Padlet will you be making? Let me know in the comments below. Share your inspirations with me. Tell me what you want to do with it. Thanks for watching and we’ll see you next week.
