ONE TEXAS TOWN HAS BECOME THE FIRST TO TAKE ON BULLIES WITH A NEW ORDINANCE THAT MAKES THEM CRIMINALS. THE TOWN OF CRANDALL IS BELIEVED TO BE THE ONLY ONE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS TO OUTLAW BULLYING. Reporter: CRANDALL LATER PASSED AT THIS HISTORIC ORDINANCE, NOT ONLY TO USE AS AN ENFORCEMENT TOOL, BUT ALSO TO SEND A MESSAGE THAT ADDRESSES A PROBLEM HAPPENING BEYOND SCHOOL CAMPUSES. WITH ITS HISTORIC DOWNTOWN SQUARE AND GAZEBO, CRANDALL HAS ALL THE CHARM YOU FIND IN SMALL TOWNS. BUT EVEN FRIENDLY SMALL TOWNS HAVE SAD STORIES LIKE AUDREY’S. PEOPLE TEXT ME AND SOMETIMES TELL ME TO KILL MYSELF. THE 16-YEAR-OLD ENDURED BULLYING TO THE POINT OF TRANSFERRING TO ANOTHER SCHOOL, AND THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE. I ENDED UP HURTING MYSELF BECAUSE I FELT LIKE WORTHLESS AND EVERYONE HATED ME. AUDREY’S EXPERIENCE IS ONE REASON CRANDALL’S TOWN COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED AN ORDINANCE THAT MAKES BULLYING A CRIME. WE’VE DECIDED, AS A CITY, TO SET SOMETHING OUT THERE TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP WITHIN THE STATE OF TEXAS, TO PASS AN ORDINANCE. YOU KNOW, HOW IT WILL GO, DON’T KNOW THAT ANSWER YET. CRANDALL’S MAYOR SAID HE HASN’T FOUND ANOTHER TOWN OR CITY IN TEXAS TO TREAT BULLYING IS A CLASS C MISDEMEANOR. THE POLICE CHIEF SAYS THE ORDINANCE WILL NOT APPLY ON SCHOOL CAMPUSES, BUT WILL HELP IF SCHOOL NEEDS IT. WE WILL BE LEARNING WHAT WE CAN SPECIFICALLY DO, AND TRY TO WORK WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS. AUDREY STILL RECEIVES COUNSELING TO DEAL WITH HER EXPERIENCE AND HOPES THE NEW ORDINANCE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I’M GLAD SOMETHING IS BEING DONE, I JUST FEEL LIKE KIDS WILL STILL DO IT.
